Over the weekend Craig and I celebrated our one year wedding anniversary and decided to take a little weekend getaway trip to Blowing Rock, NC. We had talked all year about doing a “bigger trip” for our anniversary but we’ve already gone on a beach trip this year, a trip out west, and just recently got back from backpacking Havasu Falls…and unfortunately our jobs have this thing called PTO and they only give us so much per year that we can use, lol. Bummer. But we both love the NC mountains and it’s only a 2.5 hour drive from Charlotte so we rented a cute little cabin and loved our weekend away! It went by too quickly. In case you missed my blog post on our wedding story, you can read that here.
Friday night was our date night out and we went to Gamekeeper. A little about the restaurant: “The menu changes seasonally blending the traditional with the exotic, satisfying both meat and veggie lovers. Quality and care is evident in all we produce. The freshest of local ingredients and humanely farm raised meats are served.”

We had reservations for 7:30 and it was the perfect time to see an amazing sunset from our table. We both ordered cocktails to start and got the Mixed Game Grill appetizer which is a plate of various game meats & sausage with dipping sauces and fries…YUM. Our meats were grilled bison, grilled elk, wild boar, and rabbit. I couldn’t eat the rabbit, they’re too cute lol. But I tasted the others!! The elk was my favorite, it was really delicious. Also those fries! Mmmm.
For our main entree, Craig got emu filet with spinach risotto and sun-dred tomato jus and I got the grilled breast of peking duck with honey mashed sweet potatoes & plum glaze. We both had a glass of cabernet with dinner.
Dessert was PUMPKIN CHEESECAKE because pumpkin cheesecake!!
STICK A FORK IN ME, I’M DONE.
Saturday I was up a little earlier than Craig so I made some coffee and eventually had some breakfast when he got up. Afterwards I did a quick 20 minute workout outside just to sweat out some of the alcohol from the night before ha. I sprinted up & down the very steep driveway (only fell once, lol) 10 minutes and also did some sprints in the road for about 10 minutes. A quick 20 minute sweaty workout and I was ready for a shower and to head into Blowing Rock to meander around the cute town and get lunch.

We just stopped at a little lunch place and both got turkey & provolone sandwiches with chips. Basic but delicious!
After we were done hanging out, we headed back to the house to make a bonfire, have some wine and a meat & cheese plate I carefully put together and just relax!!
Yes I had to change into comfy clothes lol. Or comfiER clothes…the ones I wore in town were super comf too!! I love this sweater and just wanted a reason to wear it basically.
We had planned to make chicken & broccoli for dinner but then after our giant lunch sandwiches (no pic, but they were gigantic) and an entire plate of meat & cheese, we weren’t hungry anymore! Oops. So instead we just waited until later in the evening when we were a little more hungry and then we broke out the GOOD STUFF.
We had 4 different types of cupcakes at our wedding and neither of us remembered to eat one at the wedding!! We didn’t do a cake cutting since we didn’t wanna stop the dance party (you can read my wedding recap post here with all the details!) So I ordered those 4 flavors: red velvet with cream cheese icing, carrot cake with cream cheese icing, chocolate with chocolate mousse icing, and vanilla with almond buttercream icing. You may be thinking you only see three here. The vanilla one may have been eaten on Friday night as second dessert following the pumpkin cheesecake 🙂 Instead of eating the top of our wedding cake like most do, I just ordered our wedding cupcakes again and took them to the mountains with us. So yes basically we ate cupcakes for dinner. We are adults!!
We were back in Charlotte on Sunday in time to watch the Panthers WIN (yay!) and then we went to the gym to get a good sweat session in before getting our favorite takeout sushi.
It was a perfect anniversary weekend 🙂
I hope your weekend was amazing!! Have you gone on any special anniversary vacays?? Lemme know…maybe will put them on the list for the future!
xo,
Bess

Happy anniversary to you! So we’re wedding twins…we got married during Hurricane Matthew on October 8 last year too (loved your gorg photos btw) and also went to the Blowing Rock/Boone area last weekend for our first anniversary! (and went to dinner at Gamekeeper on Sunday night!!! It’s where we also celebrated our engagement) 🙂
